AUGUST 26, 2008 –
Flying Silvers, the Twenty Minute Dolly, and Mango Quesadillas

Ok here we were coming into Nome truly excited for our Twin Peaks Adventure and it was far more than adventure, it was the fishing experience and camaraderie of a life time!

Our first day we helicopter to a remote strip of sand beach that separated this great river mouth from the Bering Sea. We started catching fish right away and then Steve came up to me and handed me a top water fly and said “Here try this.”  With our back casts flying over the Bering Sea we started an amazing day of “hooking up” with Silvers with flies on top! Yep you heard it right Silvers on top and I personally caught and released almost forty “flying Silvers” this way.  We caught a surprising mixture of bright silver, fresh from the Bering Sea Silvers as well as brilliant and various hues of red Silvers.

Day two began with a scenic flight into another great river system, completely different from the previous day.  A few of us were fishing our way down river while others in our group were fishing their way up river with the idea of meeting in the middle.  Below the second set of a short section of fast water, I carefully placed my fly to drift right beside a large rock on the far side of the river, as my fly began it’s drift and right at the lower outside edge of the rock, he took the fly.  At first I wondered what I had hooked and quickly discovered that I had a very large Dolly on.  That great fish ran me down stream for almost a hundred yards and then began to come back up stream and at that point my partner Dave stated “ Well we should see how long this fish will take for you to land?”

After the first huge run, the Dolly took off upstream through the rapids and while in the rapids the top third of his body was exposed out of the water!  I questioned myself as to would I actually get to land this wonderful fish.  After a long and challenging fight and the second that I released pressure on the Dolly the fly dropped out of his mouth.  We took a few wonderful photos of this huge Dolly male and measured him ending up to be a full 29 inches.  Dave turned to me and then stated what a great and beautiful fish and guess what it took you over TWENTY MINUTES to get that Dolly in!

Our fishing experience coupled with spectacular scenery and wildlife continued the entire week.  One day right after our return to the cabin, we were all sitting out back on the porch telling about our experiences of the day and out comes a platter full of Mango quesadillas.  Not only is the adventure an experience of a lifetime but as well a true wild encounter with nature, great fun and entertainment with the Twin Peaks Adventure Team.  So this day after wonderful fishing was capped with Alaskan Amber, a mango quesadilla and great friends!
